Erling Haaland scored a decisive late goal as Norway secured a historic 2-1 victory over Ivory Coast, earning the nation’s first-ever FIFA World Cup knockout-stage win and booking a place in the Round of 16.
The Norwegian striker found the back of the net in the 86th minute, finishing off a well-worked attacking move to send Norway into the next round, where they will face five-time world champions Brazil.
Following the final whistle, Haaland celebrated with teammates and supporters, describing the achievement as a landmark moment for Norwegian football.
“This is unbelievable. This is history,” Haaland said after the match.
Norway made a bright start and took the lead in the 39th minute through Antonio Nusa. The talented winger curled a precise right-footed effort into the far corner from outside the penalty area, leaving Ivory Coast goalkeeper Yahia Fofana with no chance despite a full-stretch dive.
Ivory Coast responded with determination after halftime and eventually found an equalizer in the 74th minute. Amad Diallo combined neatly with Nicolas Pépé before unleashing a powerful left-footed strike that beat goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland to level the contest.
As the match appeared to be heading toward extra time, Norway produced the decisive moment. Patrick Berg advanced into the penalty area before delivering a perfectly timed pass to Haaland, who calmly guided the ball into the net from close range for the winning goal.
The strike marked Haaland’s fifth goal in just three matches at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, further strengthening his position among the tournament’s leading scorers. It was also his 60th international goal, achieved in only 53 appearances for Norway.
Ivory Coast nearly forced extra time deep into stoppage time when Diallo earned a dangerous free kick just outside the penalty area. However, Nyland produced an outstanding save, tipping the effort away to preserve Norway’s historic victory.
Norway head coach Ståle Solbakken praised his team’s composure after conceding the equalizer.
“We stayed organized after they scored and quickly regained control of the game. The players showed great character under pressure,” Solbakken said.
Team captain Martin Ødegaard urged his teammates to enjoy the milestone while keeping their focus on the challenges ahead.
“We’re incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved. We’ll celebrate this victory, then prepare for the next challenge. We want to keep believing and continue performing at this level,” Ødegaard said.
The result marks Norway’s best-ever performance at a FIFA World Cup. Their previous appearance in the knockout stage came in 1998 after a memorable group-stage victory over Brazil, but they had never won a knockout match until now.
For Ivory Coast, the defeat ended an encouraging campaign. The young squad showed resilience throughout the tournament and pushed Norway until the final moments.
Diallo acknowledged the disappointment while expressing pride in his team’s progress.
“We’re proud of what we’ve achieved, but it’s difficult because we know the quality we have. We believed we could go further,” he said.
Norway will now turn its attention to a high-profile Round of 16 clash against Brazil, with confidence growing after creating another memorable chapter in the country’s football history.
