Dominant pitching took center stage at the 2026 MLB All-Star Game as the American League defeated the National League 4-0, recording the first All-Star shutout in more than a decade.
Toronto Blue Jays ace Dylan Cease set the tone with a brilliant opening inning, striking out three of the first four batters he faced. He was then backed by 10 American League relievers, who combined to limit the National League to just three hits throughout the contest.
The victory extended the American League’s impressive recent All-Star record, giving it 18 wins in the last 23 games and an overall advantage of 49 wins, 45 losses, and two ties in All-Star Game history.
Cease Delivers a Dominant Start
Cease made an immediate impact by striking out Kyle Schwarber, Juan Soto, and CJ Abrams in the first inning while issuing only one walk.
His performance placed him among an exclusive group of pitchers to strike out three batters in the opening inning of an MLB All-Star Game, joining several legendary names in baseball history.
Following Cease’s outing, Parker Messick, Michael Wacha, Joe Ryan, Nick Martinez, Cade Smith, Drew Rasmussen, Jacob Latz, Louis Varland, Aroldis Chapman, and Bryan Baker completed the combined three-hit shutout.
The National League never advanced a runner beyond first base, with its only hits coming from singles by Juan Soto, Pete Crow-Armstrong, and Otto Lopez.
Cody Bellinger Named All-Star MVP
American League offense arrived early against Philadelphia Phillies starter Cristopher Sánchez.
Cody Bellinger delivered a two-run single in the opening inning before Ben Rice added another RBI single to give the AL an early 3-0 advantage.
Chicago White Sox infielder Miguel Vargas provided the game’s only extra-base hit with a solo home run in the eighth inning off Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Justin Wrobleski, who was making his All-Star appearance on his 26th birthday.
Bellinger’s timely hit earned him Most Valuable Player (MVP) honors for the 2026 MLB All-Star Game.
Pitchers Dominate the Night
The game featured exceptional pitching from both teams, with pitchers combining for 27 strikeouts, including 15 by American League hurlers.
Several marquee stars were unavailable, including Shohei Ohtani, Paul Skenes, and Jacob Misiorowski, slightly reducing the event’s star power.
Only six pitches reached triple-digit velocity, the fewest recorded in an MLB All-Star Game since 2021.
Junior Caminero Leaves After Hit by Pitch
One injury scare occurred in the third inning when Tampa Bay Rays slugger Junior Caminero was struck on the left hand by a 97.6 mph sinker from St. Louis Cardinals reliever Riley O’Brien.
Caminero immediately exited the game for medical evaluation. Fortunately, X-rays showed no fractures, providing relief for both the player and the American League.
Philadelphia Celebrates Baseball Showcase
The 2026 All-Star Game featured several patriotic and historic tributes celebrating Philadelphia’s role in American history.
Players and managers entered the field through replica Liberty Bells before signing an oversized lineup card with feather quills in a ceremony inspired by the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Fireworks followed the fourth inning during a tribute featuring Ray Charles’ iconic performance of “America the Beautiful.”
Philadelphia hosted the Midsummer Classic as part of celebrations leading into the United States’ 250th anniversary.
Looking Ahead
The next MLB All-Star Game is scheduled to take place at Wrigley Field in Chicago, marking the venue’s first time hosting the event since 1990. However, uncertainty surrounding future labor negotiations could impact preparations for next year’s showcase.
