LOS ANGELES — A Florida woman accused of opening fire on the Los Angeles-area home of singer Rihanna and rapper A$AP Rocky has been found mentally competent to face trial, a judge ruled Tuesday.
Ivanna Lisette Ortiz, 36, of Orlando, Florida, has pleaded not guilty to an attempted murder charge and numerous other felony counts related to the March shooting. The ruling allows the criminal case, which had been paused for psychiatric evaluations, to resume.
Criminal Proceedings Resume
Los Angeles County Judge Maria Cavalluzzi announced that criminal proceedings would continue following months of mental health evaluations. Details of those evaluations remain sealed, and the court did not publicly discuss their findings.
Ortiz appeared in court from a custody area wearing jail clothing and handcuffs. She did not speak during the brief hearing. She was ordered to return to court Wednesday.
If convicted on all charges, Ortiz could face a life sentence.
Attorneys representing Ortiz and prosecutors declined to comment following the hearing.
Gunfire Struck Home and Trailer
According to police and prosecutors, Ortiz allegedly drove a Tesla to the Beverly Hills-area property on March 8 and fired at least 20 rounds toward Rihanna’s residence and a neighboring property.
Investigators allege that she used an AR-15-style rifle and fired from the vehicle.
No one was injured during the shooting. However, investigators discovered bullet damage to an Airstream trailer where Rihanna and A$AP Rocky were located at the time.
Gunfire also struck an exterior wall near a second-floor nursery. The couple’s three children were reportedly inside the nursery with their nanny when the shooting occurred.
Authorities said Ortiz made a statement after her arrest indicating that she had not intended to commit murder.
Multiple Felony Charges Filed
Ortiz faces 10 counts of assault with a semiautomatic firearm, with each count involving a person authorities say was present at the two properties. She is also charged with three counts of shooting at an occupied vehicle or dwelling.
The attempted murder charge and other allegations stem from the same incident.
Authorities have not publicly identified a motive or explained whether Ortiz had any known connection to Rihanna or her family.
Officials also said Ortiz had no previous criminal record. Public records indicate that she had worked as a licensed speech pathologist for more than a decade.
The case will now proceed through the regular criminal court process following the judge’s competency ruling.
