“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” has delivered a historic opening weekend, becoming the second-highest-grossing debut in North American box office history with an estimated $355 million in domestic ticket sales.
The Sony-distributed superhero blockbuster came close to surpassing the record held by “Avengers: Endgame,” which opened with $357 million in 2019. The latest Spider-Man installment also dominated international markets, generating an additional $572 million overseas and bringing its worldwide opening total to approximately $927 million.
Global Success Puts Spider-Man Near Box Office Summit
The film’s worldwide launch ranks second only to “Avengers: Endgame,” which earned roughly $1.2 billion during its opening weekend.
China played a major role in the movie’s international performance, contributing about $121 million to the global total.
The success continues a remarkable box office journey for Tom Holland’s portrayal of Peter Parker. His previous standalone film, “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” earned more than $1.9 billion worldwide, becoming one of the highest-grossing movies ever released.
Record-Breaking Opening Day
“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” opened with an estimated $168 million on its first day across 4,487 theaters in the United States and Canada, surpassing the previous opening-day record held by “Avengers: Endgame,” which earned $157 million.
Before release, Sony projected a weekend debut of around $325 million, but audience demand exceeded expectations.
The film now ranks ahead of previous record-setting superhero openings, including:
- “Spider-Man: No Way Home” — $260 million
- “Avengers: Infinity War” — $257 million
- “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” — $247 million
Strong Reviews Boost Audience Interest
Expectations for “Brand New Day” were already high due to the popularity of earlier Spider-Man films, although some industry observers questioned whether it could match the excitement generated by “No Way Home,” which featured previous Spider-Man actors Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield.
However, the latest film attracted strong audience interest and positive reactions from critics.
The movie currently holds a 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, received an A CinemaScore from opening audiences and earned strong ratings in post-release audience surveys.
Young Audiences Drive Superhero Comeback
According to audience data, younger moviegoers played a major role in the film’s success.
Around 61% of opening-weekend ticket buyers were male, while more than half of viewers were under 25 years old. The largest audience group was people aged 18 to 24, followed by moviegoers between 25 and 34.
Box office analysts estimate that approximately 24 million people attended screenings during the opening weekend.
The film also achieved a major milestone for Sony Pictures, becoming the studio’s biggest domestic opening ever.
Hollywood Celebrates Renewed Superhero Demand
The performance of “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” has renewed discussions about the future of superhero movies after several recent high-profile disappointments in the genre.
Industry leaders say the latest success demonstrates that audiences remain interested in superhero stories when they combine large-scale entertainment with emotional storytelling.
Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige credited the film’s debut to the lasting popularity of Marvel characters and their connection with fans worldwide.
Producer Amy Pascal said the response showed that audiences continue to seek movies that deliver both spectacle and human stories.
‘The Odyssey’ Maintains Strong Run
Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey,” starring Tom Holland and Zendaya, dropped to second place during its third weekend with $51 million in domestic ticket sales.
The film has now earned about $395.5 million domestically and more than $911 million worldwide.
Its continued strength helped create one of the biggest overall weekends in North American box office history, with total ticket sales estimated at approximately $430 million.
Summer Box Office Gains Momentum
Entertainment analysts say the success of “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” could help push the summer box office toward record territory.
Paul Dergarabedian of Rentrak said the strong performance could help the summer movie season exceed $4 billion in revenue for the first time since 2023.
Other films rounding out the weekend’s top 10 included animated releases such as “Toy Story 5,” “Minions & Monsters” and “Moana,” while “Hadestown: The Musical” became the highest-grossing live theater capture release ever.
With a record-setting opening and strong audience response, “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” has positioned itself as one of the biggest cinematic events of the year and further strengthened the global appeal of superhero films.
