Michael B. Jordan captured his first Academy Award on Sunday, winning Best Actor at the 98th Academy Awards for his standout dual performance in the film Sinners.
The victory marks a major milestone for Jordan, who has grown from a child actor into one of Hollywood’s most prominent leading men. His performance as twin brothers Smoke and Stack in the action-thriller earned widespread praise from critics and audiences alike.
A Breakthrough Night for Sinners
The Warner Bros. production had a strong showing at the ceremony, taking home four awards overall. The film’s director, Ryan Coogler, also won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay, adding to the movie’s successful night.
Despite its achievements, Sinners narrowly missed the top prize. The Best Picture award went to another Warner Bros. production, One Battle After Another.
Jordan used his acceptance speech to thank Coogler, calling him both “a collaborator and a friend,” and expressing gratitude for giving him the opportunity to play such a challenging role.
Emotional Acceptance Speech
The actor received a standing ovation as he took the stage. In an emotional moment, he acknowledged his parents, noting that his father had traveled from Ghana to witness the milestone.
Jordan also thanked Warner Bros. executives for supporting Coogler’s creative vision and investing in original storytelling. He emphasized the importance of backing fresh ideas and diverse voices in filmmaking.
During his speech, Jordan paid tribute to legendary Black performers who paved the way for future generations, including Jamie Foxx, Will Smith, Sidney Poitier and Halle Berry.
Strong Competition in Best Actor Race
The Best Actor category was considered one of the most competitive of the night. Jordan triumphed over a lineup that included Timothée Chalamet for Marty Supreme, Leonardo DiCaprio for One Battle After Another, Ethan Hawke for Blue Moon and Wagner Moura for The Secret Agent.
Several of the nominees were competing for their first Oscar win, making the race especially close.
From Child Actor to Hollywood Star
Jordan first gained attention as a teenager with his role in the acclaimed TV series The Wire before joining the cast of Friday Night Lights.
His film breakthrough came with Fruitvale Station, directed by Coogler, launching a creative partnership that would later produce major hits including Black Panther and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Jordan also gained global popularity through the Creed film series.
With his first Oscar now secured, Jordan’s career continues to rise as he joins the ranks of Hollywood’s most celebrated actors.
