A Hawaii man accused of killing three elderly men during a violent series of attacks on the Big Island has been formally charged with murder, according to police officials.
Authorities identified the suspect as Jacob Daniel Baker, 36, who now faces multiple felony charges following a dayslong manhunt across the island’s rural Puna District.
Multiple Murder Charges Filed
The Hawaii Police Department confirmed that Baker has been charged with one count of first-degree murder and three counts of second-degree murder in connection with the deaths of three men aged 69, 69, and 79.
Officials said the first-degree charge relates to the intentional killing of multiple victims, while the additional charges cover each individual death.
Prosecutors have also added charges including burglary, vehicle theft, and unauthorized entry, as investigators continue to build their case.
Baker is being held without bail on the murder charges.
Victims Identified in Separate Crime Scenes
Authorities identified two of the victims as 69-year-old Robert Shine and 69-year-old John Carse. The identity of the third victim, a 79-year-old man, has not been publicly released pending family notification.
Investigators said the killings occurred at separate locations in the Pāhoa and Kalapana areas, spread across Hawaii’s eastern Big Island region.
One victim was discovered partially submerged in a man-made pond, while another was found inside a residence with signs of violent trauma. The third victim was located at a separate property roughly 19 miles away.
Autopsy reports indicated causes of death including strangulation and sharp-force injuries.
Arrest After Island-Wide Manhunt
Baker was arrested in Kalapana after an extensive search involving multiple law enforcement units. Police said he was spotted hiding in a field before fleeing and was later found inside a small cave.
Officials described the arrest as the conclusion of an intense manhunt following the discovery of multiple crime scenes over several days.
Motive Still Unknown
Investigators have not yet released a possible motive for the killings. Authorities say there is no confirmed connection between all three victims, although two of them lived in close proximity in the same rural neighborhood.
Law enforcement continues to review evidence and interview witnesses as the case develops.
Court Proceedings Ahead
Baker is scheduled to make his initial court appearance in Hilo District Court. Prosecutors say additional charges could be filed as the investigation continues.
Officials emphasized that the case remains active and urged the public to allow the judicial process to proceed
