Authorities in New Mexico have confirmed that human remains discovered in a national forest belong to Melissa Casias, a 53-year-old woman who had been missing for nearly a year after failing to report to work.
The remains were found last week in the McGaffey Ridge area of the Carson National Forest by a hiker, according to officials. The New Mexico Office of the Medical Investigator later confirmed the identity.
Discovery Made After Months-Long Search
Casias was reported missing in June of last year after she did not arrive at her job at the Los Alamos National Laboratory, a major national security and scientific research institution.
Investigators said the discovery site was located roughly six miles from her home. The area is accessible via a nearby state highway, which she was last seen walking along on the day she disappeared.
Investigation Underway Into Cause of Death
Authorities also confirmed that a handgun was found near the remains. However, officials have not yet determined the cause or manner of death, which remains under investigation by the state medical examiner.
Law enforcement agencies said they are considering all possibilities as they continue to piece together what happened in the months following her disappearance.
Timeline of Disappearance
Casias was last seen on the day she reportedly dropped off her husband at work at Los Alamos National Laboratory. She later told family she was heading to another site within the facility for a work-related task but never returned.
A family acquaintance reportedly saw her walking along State Road 518 later that same day. She was officially reported missing after she failed to show up for work.
Her belongings, including personal items and a phone that had been reset to factory settings, were later found at her home in Ranchos de Taos.
Family Awaits Further Answers
Authorities have extended condolences to the family and said the investigation remains active. Relatives have not yet commented publicly, saying they are awaiting further information from investigators.
Police previously noted that while foul play has not been confirmed, it has not been ruled out either.
Ongoing Investigation
The case continues to be reviewed by state investigators, who are working to determine the circumstances surrounding Casias’ disappearance and death.
Officials have urged patience as forensic analysis is completed and more details are expected in the coming weeks.
