Mexico ends a 40-year knockout drought in 2-0 win over Ecuador to reach the round of 16

MEXICO CITY — Mexico finally ended four decades of disappointment in the FIFA World Cup knockout rounds after defeating Ecuador 2-0 on Tuesday to secure a place in the Round of 16.

Goals from Julián Quiñones and Raúl Jiménez in the opening half powered El Tri to their first World Cup knockout-stage victory since defeating Bulgaria during the 1986 tournament, which Mexico hosted. The win also ended a frustrating run of seven consecutive eliminations in the first knockout round.

Quiñones opened the scoring in the 22nd minute with a composed finish before Jiménez doubled Mexico’s advantage just nine minutes later, giving the home side complete control of the contest.

Mexico head coach Javier Aguirre, who played in the historic 1986 squad and has now guided the national team through another milestone, described the victory as an emotional achievement.

“It means a great deal to me because I experienced the heartbreak of not advancing in previous tournaments. The connection between this team and our supporters is incredible, and tonight feels very special,” Aguirre said after the match.

Mexico’s struggles in the knockout stage had become one of the country’s longest-standing football frustrations. After reaching the Round of 16 in every World Cup from 1994 through 2018, El Tri failed to progress each time before exiting in the group stage in 2022.

Since returning as head coach in August 2024, Aguirre has rebuilt the squad into one of the tournament’s most disciplined teams. He emphasized that the players would quickly shift their attention to the next challenge.

“Our focus now is on recovery and preparation. We know the competition only becomes tougher from here,” he said.

Quiñones continued his outstanding tournament by scoring his third goal of the competition. The forward, who represents Mexico after becoming a naturalized citizen in 2023, has emerged as one of the team’s most influential attacking players.

“I’m happy because the team won. That’s the only thing that matters right now,” Quiñones said.

Born in Colombia, the 29-year-old moved to Mexico as a teenager and earned his place in the national team after several successful seasons in domestic football. His performances at the World Cup have made him one of Mexico’s top scorers in tournament history.

Jiménez also reached another personal milestone with his second goal of the tournament. The experienced striker now has 47 international goals, moving ahead of Jared Borgetti on Mexico’s all-time scoring list. He is now just five goals away from equaling Javier “Chicharito” Hernández as the country’s record goalscorer.

The victory extended Mexico’s unbeaten streak to 12 matches across all competitions and reinforced the team’s impressive record at the iconic Azteca Stadium, where they remain unbeaten in World Cup matches.

The result also created another piece of history, as Mexico became the first CONCACAF nation to eliminate a South American team in a FIFA World Cup knockout-stage match.

The kickoff was delayed by one hour because of severe weather, marking the second weather-related interruption during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Mexico will now prepare for a Round of 16 clash against the winner of the match between England and Congo, aiming to continue its memorable World Cup campaign and move one step closer to a place in the quarterfinals.
