Haaland scores deciding goal as Norway wins its 1st World Cup knockout game, beating Ivory Coast

ARLINGTON, Texas — Erling Haaland delivered another decisive performance on the world stage, scoring a dramatic late winner as Norway defeated Ivory Coast 2-1 to claim its first-ever victory in a FIFA World Cup knockout match and advance to the Round of 16.

The Manchester City striker struck in the 86th minute, capping off a tense encounter and securing a memorable milestone in Norwegian football history. The victory also sets up a blockbuster clash with five-time world champions Brazil in the next round.

Following the final whistle, Haaland celebrated with teammates and supporters, calling the achievement a historic moment for the nation.

“This is unbelievable. This is history,” Haaland said after the match.

Norway opened the scoring in the 39th minute when Antonio Nusa curled a superb right-footed effort into the far corner after cutting inside from the left, giving his side a deserved halftime lead.

Ivory Coast responded strongly after the break and restored parity in the 74th minute. Amad Diallo combined effectively with Nicolas Pépé before firing a powerful left-footed shot past goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland to make it 1-1.

With extra time looming, Norway produced the decisive breakthrough. Patrick Berg carried the ball into the penalty area before finding Haaland in space. The striker calmly redirected the pass into the net from close range, recording the winning goal.

The goal was Haaland’s fifth of the 2026 FIFA World Cup and his remarkable 60th international goal in just 53 appearances for Norway, further highlighting his outstanding scoring record.

Ivory Coast pushed forward in the closing moments and nearly forced extra time when Diallo earned a dangerous free kick deep into stoppage time. However, Nyland produced an excellent save to deny the effort and preserve Norway’s historic victory.

Norway head coach Ståle Solbakken praised his team’s response after conceding the equalizer.

“After they leveled the score, the players remained composed and quickly regained control. Their character and discipline made the difference,” Solbakken said.

Captain Martin Ødegaard said the squad intends to enjoy the historic achievement before shifting its attention to the next challenge.

“We’re proud of what we’ve accomplished. It’s an incredible feeling, but we know there’s another big match ahead. We want to keep believing and continue performing at this level,” Ødegaard said.

The victory marks Norway’s first appearance in the World Cup knockout rounds since the 1998 tournament, where the team famously defeated Brazil in the group stage but failed to advance beyond the Round of 16.

For Ivory Coast, the defeat ended an encouraging campaign. Despite the loss, the young squad impressed throughout the tournament and remained competitive until the final whistle.

Diallo expressed pride in his team’s performance while acknowledging the disappointment of the result.

“We’re proud of our effort, but it’s difficult to accept because we know the quality we have and what we were capable of achieving,” he said.
