Trump to nominate Todd Blanche to be attorney general

President Donald Trump has announced his intention to nominate acting Attorney General Todd Blanche as the next permanent head of the U.S. Department of Justice, marking a significant step in reshaping the nation’s top law enforcement office.

The announcement was made during a private White House gathering on Wednesday evening and later shared publicly through a video posted by senior administration officials. If confirmed by the Senate, Blanche would formally take over one of the most powerful legal positions in the federal government.

A Rapid Rise Inside the Justice Department

Blanche assumed the role of acting attorney general in April after the dismissal of former Attorney General Pam Bondi. Prior to that, he served as her deputy and was already closely aligned with Trump’s legal team, having previously acted as the president’s personal defense attorney in multiple high-profile cases.

His transition from defense lawyer to top federal prosecutor has been closely watched, given his direct involvement in Trump’s legal battles and his relatively short tenure in senior government leadership.

Controversial Investigations Under Leadership

Since taking office, Blanche has overseen a Justice Department approach that critics describe as aggressively focused on individuals viewed as political adversaries of the president. Supporters argue the actions reflect a renewed emphasis on accountability within federal institutions.

Among the most high-profile developments was the indictment of former FBI Director James Comey. Prosecutors alleged that a social media post containing seashell imagery and the numbers “86 47” could be interpreted as a threat against the president. Comey has rejected the accusation, stating the post had no violent intent.

The Comey indictment followed an earlier case against him that was dismissed by a federal judge last year. That ruling also affected a separate prosecution involving New York Attorney General Letitia James, with the court questioning the legitimacy of the appointment of the federal prosecutor involved.

Policy Direction and Internal Reversals

Blanche has also played a central role in revising controversial policy proposals within the Justice Department. One such initiative—a proposed multibillion-dollar “anti-weaponization” compensation fund intended for individuals claiming federal targeting—has now been abandoned following bipartisan criticism in Congress.

Officials confirmed that the plan will not move forward, signaling a shift in the administration’s approach after weeks of political pushback.

Senate Confirmation Ahead

Blanche’s nomination now moves to the U.S. Senate, where he was previously confirmed as deputy attorney general in a closely divided vote. His confirmation as the nation’s top law enforcement official is expected to trigger intense scrutiny given his close relationship with the president and his role in politically sensitive investigations.

If approved, Blanche would become a central figure in shaping federal prosecutions and Justice Department policy during the remainder of Trump’s term.
