The nomination of Todd Blanche to become the next U.S. attorney general is facing uncertainty as several Republican senators seek additional commitments from the Justice Department before allowing the nomination process to move forward.
Blanche’s confirmation effort has encountered resistance over concerns surrounding a controversial agreement involving President Donald Trump’s tax records and a proposed “anti-weaponization” fund. Some lawmakers have requested written assurances that the fund will be eliminated and that related protections involving tax audits will be reviewed.
The Senate Judiciary Committee is scheduled to consider Blanche’s nomination, but Republican Sens. John Cornyn of Texas and Thom Tillis of North Carolina have raised concerns that could complicate his path to a full Senate vote.
The dispute centers on a legal settlement connected to Trump’s lawsuit over the disclosure of his tax information. The agreement included provisions affecting the treatment of tax audits involving Trump, his family members and his businesses, while also creating a fund that critics have argued could be used for political purposes.
Federal courts have taken different actions related to the dispute. One judge temporarily blocked the fund after a legal challenge, while another ruled that Trump’s lawsuit was filed improperly and imposed sanctions against individuals involved, including Blanche.
Cornyn said he has not received sufficient written proposals addressing his concerns, while Tillis said discussions with the Justice Department were continuing and that officials were working on possible changes.
Meanwhile, U.S. and Israeli officials continue to assess the future of the conflict with Iran as diplomatic and military options remain under discussion.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu recently met with President Trump and senior U.S. officials to discuss possible paths forward, including a negotiated agreement preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons, continued economic pressure, or further military action.
Officials involved in the discussions said preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon remains a central priority. However, disagreements remain over how that goal should be achieved and what role military action should play.
