The New York Police Department has launched an internal investigation after a widely circulated video appeared to show officers punching and kicking a man during an arrest in Brooklyn, prompting public outrage and renewed scrutiny of police conduct.
City officials, including New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani, condemned the actions seen in the footage, calling the incident “extremely disturbing and unacceptable.”
Video Sparks Immediate Backlash
The nearly eight-minute video, shared on social media by a witness, shows officers restraining a man inside a wine shop in Boerum Hill while a confrontation escalates. The footage appears to capture multiple instances of physical force, including punches and a knee strike, as the man is held down.
The incident took place Tuesday at BK Wine Depot during what authorities described as a “planned and supervised undercover operation” targeting alleged drug activity in the area.
The video quickly spread online, drawing criticism from members of the public and elected officials who questioned the level of force used during the arrest.
Police Launch Internal Affairs Investigation
The New York City Police Department confirmed that its Internal Affairs Bureau is reviewing the incident.
Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch described the footage as “deeply disturbing” and acknowledged public concern. Officers involved have been placed on modified duty while the investigation is ongoing, with their firearms and shields reportedly removed.
Officials emphasized that a full review is underway to determine whether department policies were violated.
Mayor Calls Conduct “Unacceptable”
New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani also responded to the video, sharing it publicly and calling for a full investigation into the officers’ actions. He said the conduct shown was not acceptable and stressed that individuals should not be treated in such a manner by law enforcement.
His remarks added political pressure to an already unfolding internal inquiry.
Confusion Over Suspected Identity
According to police statements, the operation began when undercover officers purchased crack cocaine from an individual, with payment passed to another person believed to be involved in the transaction.
Officers later encountered a man who matched the description of a suspected associate and attempted to arrest him inside the store.
However, authorities later confirmed that the man seen in the video was not actually involved in the drug sale.
Charges Filed in Drug Operation
While the man in the video was charged with resisting arrest and obstructing governmental administration, police said he was not charged in connection with drug distribution.
He was issued a desk appearance ticket.
The individual who allegedly sold drugs to the undercover officer was arrested separately and charged with criminal sale of a controlled substance.
Bystander Footage Raises Questions
The video shows bystanders questioning the officers’ use of force, with one witness saying the man was not resisting arrest. Officers can be heard insisting otherwise during the confrontation.
At several points, the footage shows the man restrained on the ground as officers attempt to handcuff him, while onlookers express concern over his condition.
Broader Scrutiny of Police Conduct
The incident has renewed public debate over policing tactics in New York City, particularly during undercover operations where misidentification can occur.
Officials say the Internal Affairs investigation will determine whether the force used was justified and whether departmental protocols were followed.
