Authorities in Austin, Texas, are investigating a violent weekend shooting spree that left four people injured and prompted a brief citywide shelter-in-place order as police searched for suspects involved in at least 10 separate incidents across the capital.
Three individuals, including two teenagers, are now in custody following the coordinated series of shootings that stretched from Saturday afternoon into early Sunday morning.
Multiple Random Shootings Across Austin
According to Austin police officials, the suspects traveled around the city in stolen vehicles and carried out a string of apparently random shootings targeting homes, apartment complexes, and even fire stations.
Investigators say at least four different vehicles were used during the incidents, which unfolded across multiple neighborhoods and caused widespread alarm among residents.
Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis said the shootings appeared to lack a clear motive and were being treated as random acts of violence.
“We don’t have any specific motive that has been identified,” Austin Mayor Kirk Watson said. “These actions appear to be random.”
Teen Suspects Taken Into Custody
Police arrested two suspects, ages 15 and 17, after they were stopped in a stolen vehicle and attempted to flee on foot. A third suspect, who had initially remained at large, was later taken into custody by authorities in nearby Manor, Texas.
Officials confirmed that the firearm used in the attacks was stolen earlier by the 15-year-old suspect. The 17-year-old was also wanted in connection with a separate firearm theft.
Authorities have not yet confirmed the full role of the third individual in the shooting spree.
Victims and Emergency Response
At least four people were injured during the attacks and transported to local hospitals. One victim remains in critical condition, according to officials.
Emergency services responded to multiple scenes throughout the city as reports of gunfire continued to come in over several hours.
The scale of the incidents led city officials to issue a shelter-in-place order for parts of South Austin while law enforcement conducted a coordinated search for the suspects. The order was later lifted after two of the individuals were apprehended.
Stolen Vehicles and Widespread Disruption
Police said the suspects stole at least four vehicles during the course of the spree, using them to move rapidly between locations across the city.
The unpredictable nature of the shootings and the use of multiple vehicles contributed to the difficulty in tracking the suspects in real time, authorities said.
No Known Motive as Investigation Continues
Officials emphasized that investigators have not yet identified a motive for the attacks. The randomness of the shootings has raised concerns among residents and local leaders, who are now calling for further clarity as the investigation continues.
Law enforcement agencies are continuing to examine evidence from each shooting scene in an effort to determine how the incidents are connected and whether additional suspects may be involved.
For now, authorities say the priority remains securing the affected neighborhoods and ensuring the injured victims receive medical care.
