MANILA, Philippines — A powerful 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck off the southern coast of the Philippines on Monday morning, killing at least four people, injuring more than 200 others, and triggering tsunami warnings across parts of Southeast Asia.
The strong offshore quake caused structural damage to buildings, disrupted transportation services, and forced thousands of residents to seek safety as authorities assessed the extent of the destruction.
Strong Tremor Hits Near Major Southern City
According to seismic monitoring agencies, the earthquake originated beneath the sea near the southern Philippine city of General Santos, one of Mindanao’s most important commercial and industrial centers.
The tremor struck shortly after sunrise, sending residents rushing from homes, schools, and workplaces as buildings swayed violently. The quake was felt across large portions of Mindanao and neighboring regions.
Officials reported that the earthquake occurred along the Cotabato Trench, a highly active seismic zone known for generating powerful earthquakes.
Casualties and Injuries Reported
Emergency authorities confirmed that at least four people lost their lives due to earthquake-related incidents, while more than 200 individuals sustained injuries.
General Santos recorded the highest number of casualties and injuries, with many victims suffering from falling debris, structural damage, and panic-related accidents during evacuations.
Several students were among the injured after chaotic scenes unfolded during school assemblies and morning activities. Health officials continue to monitor hospitals and emergency facilities as additional reports emerge from affected areas.
Buildings and Infrastructure Damaged

Monitoring stations recorded waves reaching approximately three feet along portions of the southern Philippine coastline, particularly in coastal provinces facing the quake’s epicenter.
Smaller sea-level fluctuations were detected in other regions, while authorities in Malaysia and Indonesia issued precautionary tsunami advisories for vulnerable coastal communities.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center later announced that the most significant tsunami threat had largely subsided several hours after the earthquake. However, experts warned that unusual sea-level changes and strong currents could continue for some time.
