NEW YORK — Six people were injured in a stabbing incident at New York City’s Penn Station on Sunday evening, prompting a large emergency response at one of the nation’s busiest transportation hubs, authorities said.

Police confirmed that a suspect has been taken into custody following the attack, which unfolded shortly after 7 p.m. inside the major rail terminal in Midtown Manhattan.

Attack Reported at Busy Transit Hub

Emergency services received multiple calls reporting a stabbing incident at Penn Station, a key transportation center serving Amtrak, commuter rail, and subway lines.

According to fire officials, several victims were found with stab wounds and treated at the scene before being transported to nearby hospitals, including Bellevue Hospital and Weill Cornell Medical Center.

Officials reported that one victim suffered serious injuries, while the remaining individuals sustained minor to moderate wounds.

Suspect Taken Into Custody

Authorities said Amtrak Police quickly responded to the scene and detained a suspect believed to be responsible for the attack.

A senior law enforcement official stated that the individual taken into custody is believed to be experiencing mental health issues. Early assessments indicate there is no evidence suggesting the incident was linked to terrorism.

A knife believed to have been used in the attack was recovered at the scene, according to officials.

Emergency Response and Public Safety Measures

New York City emergency services, including police and fire departments, were deployed to Penn Station shortly after the incident was reported. The area was temporarily secured as authorities investigated and assisted victims.

Despite the severity of the incident, transit officials confirmed that train operations, including Amtrak services, were not significantly disrupted.

Officials React to the Violence

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said he had been briefed on the situation and praised Amtrak Police for their rapid response to the attack. He expressed support for the victims and their families and wished them a swift recovery.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul also condemned the stabbing, calling it a “horrific act of violence” and emphasizing the need for continued efforts to ensure public safety across the state.

Investigation Ongoing

Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack, including the suspect’s motive and mental health history. Officials have not released further identifying details about the individual in custody.

Law enforcement agencies stated that updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
