Switzerland secured a dramatic place in the World Cup quarterfinals after defeating Colombia 4-3 in a penalty shootout following a tense scoreless draw on Tuesday.
The decisive moment came when Rubén Vargas converted Switzerland’s final penalty attempt, sending his team through to the next round after a tightly contested match.
Switzerland will now face defending champion Argentina national football team on Saturday at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium. Argentina advanced earlier in the day with a 3-2 victory over Egypt.
The result marked a historic achievement for Switzerland, which reached the World Cup quarterfinals for the first time since hosting the tournament in 1954. The Swiss had reached the knockout stage in their previous three World Cup appearances but had been unable to progress further under the 32-team format.
The match was decided by fine margins, with both teams struggling to break through organized defenses during 120 minutes of play. Switzerland controlled more possession, while Colombia looked dangerous on counterattacks and through individual attacking moments.
The penalty shootout remained tense. Colombia defender Davinson Sánchez hit the crossbar with his attempt, while Swiss goalkeeper Gregor Kobel made a crucial save against Cucho Hernández to give Switzerland the advantage.
Vargas entered the match late after recovering from a training issue and delivered the biggest moment of the game. The forward had already scored twice during the tournament before becoming the hero of the shootout.
Switzerland entered the match without several key players, including young midfielder Johan Manzambi, who suffered an injury during training. Manzambi had been one of the tournament’s breakout performers, contributing three goals before being ruled out.
Colombia, supported by a large crowd wearing the team’s traditional yellow colors at BC Place, missed a chance to match its 2014 World Cup run, when it reached the quarterfinals in Brazil.
The Colombian side created some of the match’s best chances, including a long-range effort from Gustavo Puerta that was stopped by Kobel and a header from Jhon Lucumí that struck the crossbar during extra time.
Switzerland’s victory continues its impressive World Cup campaign and sets up a highly anticipated quarterfinal clash against Argentina, one of the tournament favorites.
