England captain Harry Kane matched the national record for World Cup goals with a brace in a 4–2 victory over Croatia on Wednesday, strengthening his status as one of England’s most prolific scorers on the global stage.
The win, played in Arlington, Texas, saw England overcome a resilient Croatian side in an entertaining group-stage clash marked by early goals, momentum swings, and a strong second-half response from the English squad.
Kane Reaches Historic Milestone
Kane’s two goals took his World Cup tally to 10, equaling the long-standing England record held by Gary Lineker, who scored in the 1986 and 1990 tournaments. The Bayern Munich striker, who previously won the Golden Boot at the 2018 World Cup, continues to build on his legacy as England’s leading international scorer, now with 81 total goals.
His opening goal came from the penalty spot after a video review overturned the initial attempt due to a procedural infringement by Croatia’s goalkeeper. Kane calmly converted the retaken penalty, sending the ball the opposite way of the dive.
He later doubled his tally with a powerful header from a corner, showcasing his aerial strength and positioning inside the box.
England Overcome Croatian Resistance
Croatia responded strongly through goals from Martin Baturina and Petar Musa, keeping the match level at halftime. Musa’s equalizer came just before the break, briefly silencing England’s momentum.
However, England regained control early in the second half when Jude Bellingham scored a solo goal just minutes after the restart, restoring the lead with a composed finish after breaking through the defense.
Marcus Rashford added a late goal to secure the 4–2 win, sealing England’s strong performance in the group stage.
Croatia’s Veterans and MLS Link
Croatian midfielder Luka Modrić continued his record World Cup appearance streak, featuring in his fifth tournament at age 40. Despite his experience, Croatia struggled to contain England’s attacking pressure in the second half.
One of Croatia’s goals came from Petar Musa, who plays club football in Major League Soccer with FC Dallas, giving local fans in Texas a notable connection to the match.
England’s Momentum Builds
England’s victory keeps them in a strong position in their group campaign as they prepare for their next fixture against Ghana. Croatia will look to regroup ahead of their upcoming match against Panama.
With Kane in record-equalling form and England’s attack firing, the team continues to be viewed as a strong contender as the tournament progresses.
