Elon Musk’s Foundation Grows to $14 Billion, but Gives Little to Outsiders

Elon Musk’s charitable foundation has grown into one of the largest in the United States, with assets surpassing $14 billion in 2024. Yet despite its extraordinary size, the Musk Foundation continues to fall short of federal requirements for annual charitable giving—and the vast majority of its donations still go to organizations closely tied to the billionaire’s personal and business ventures.

According to the foundation’s newly released 2024 tax filing, the nonprofit distributed $474 million last year, its highest annual giving to date. More than 75 percent of that money—approximately $370 million—went to a Texas nonprofit overseen by one of Musk’s top aides. The organization operates an elementary school in Bastrop, near several of Musk’s companies, and is planning to expand into a high school and eventually a university. Since 2022, the Musk Foundation has directed roughly $607 million to this single entity.

Another $35 million was transferred into a donor-advised fund managed by Fidelity. Although donor-advised funds are designed to support future charitable giving, Musk’s foundation retains influence over how those assets are eventually distributed.

The filings indicate that Musk’s philanthropy increasingly mirrors the interests of his companies, with grants concentrated in regions where he maintains a major corporate presence. Several nonprofits in South Texas—home to SpaceX’s launch and manufacturing facilities—received funding, as did groups in Austin, where Musk resides. The foundation also donated $5 million to the Windward School in Los Angeles, which one of Musk’s children attended, and made contributions to Jewish organizations amid heightened scrutiny of Musk’s public statements on antisemitism.

Despite its massive endowment, the Musk Foundation has repeatedly failed to meet the IRS requirement that private foundations give away at least 5 percent of their assets annually. It missed the minimum in 2021, 2022 and 2023, leaving a $421 million shortfall that had to be funded in 2024. While that obligation was met, the foundation still fell $393 million short of its required 2024 distribution. Under IRS rules, it now has until the end of 2025 to satisfy the outstanding amount.

The structure and operations of the foundation remain unusually lean for an organization of its size. Musk and two aides manage it on an unpaid basis, with one staff member reporting an average of just six minutes of foundation work per week. Its public-facing website, sparse and outdated, stands in sharp contrast to the polished philanthropic branding common among other billionaire donors.

Musk, the world’s richest person, acknowledged his philanthropic challenges in a recent podcast interview, saying it is “very difficult to give money away for the reality of goodness.” He founded the Musk Foundation in 2001 with his brother, Kimbal Musk, and has since contributed roughly 18 million Tesla shares, helping propel the charity into the top tier of American foundations as Tesla’s value soared.

Still, while peers such as Bill Gates, MacKenzie Scott, and the Walton family have broadened their philanthropic commitments over time, Musk’s giving remains deeply entangled with his professional ecosystem—prompting questions about how much of the foundation’s impact extends beyond his own orbit.
