A Michigan man has been sentenced to decades in prison after fatally striking his groomsman with a vehicle on the same day as his wedding, in a case that prosecutors say stemmed from an alcohol-fueled altercation that escalated into deadly violence.
The case involves James Shirah, who was sentenced in Genesee County court after pleading no contest to second-degree murder in connection with the death of Terry Taylor Jr..
Wedding Celebration Turns Deadly
According to court records and prosecutors, the incident occurred in Flint, Michigan, shortly after Shirah’s wedding in August 2024. Celebrations had continued at a private residence when an argument broke out among guests.
Authorities say Shirah later struck Taylor with a vehicle, leading to his death. The incident took place roughly an hour’s drive northwest of Detroit.
Court Hears Conflicting Accounts of Intent
During proceedings, Shirah’s defense argued that the fatal crash was not intentional. Prosecutors, however, maintained that he left the scene and later returned before striking the victim, suggesting a period of reflection prior to the incident.
A judge ultimately sentenced Shirah to a minimum of 30 years in prison, stating that while the defendant was “not a criminal” in character, his actions resulted in a fatal outcome.
Emotional Statements in Courtroom
Before sentencing, Shirah expressed remorse for his actions, apologizing to the victim’s family and acknowledging the lasting impact of the tragedy.
Family members of the victim also addressed the court, calling for a strict sentence and describing the emotional devastation caused by the loss.
Legal Outcome and Future Sentencing
Shirah previously entered a no contest plea to second-degree murder charges and will be eligible for parole after serving his minimum sentence.
In a related part of the case, his wife—who was married to him on the same day as the incident—is scheduled to be sentenced later this month for her role as an accessory.
Case Highlights Alcohol and Violence Concerns
The case has drawn attention due to its unusual circumstances, including the timing of the crime on a wedding night and the role alcohol allegedly played in the events leading up to the fatal confrontation.
Authorities say the investigation remains a reminder of how quickly celebratory gatherings can turn tragic when violence escalates.
