Army specialist accused of interstate threat after FBI says he discussed attacking synagogue and killing Jewish people
A U.S. Army soldier stationed at Fort Polk in Louisiana has been arrested and charged after allegedly making violent antisemitic threats in an online chat, including statements about attacking a synagogue and killing Jewish people, according to the Justice Department.
Authorities say the case was initiated after federal investigators received a tip about threatening messages shared on the chat platform Discord.
Alleged Threats Made on Online Platform
The suspect, identified as 22-year-old Jakob Marcoulier, was arrested last week and charged with transmitting threats in interstate commerce.
According to court documents, the FBI’s National Threat Operations Center was alerted in February to disturbing statements made by a user on Discord operating under the name “el.bostino.”
Investigators later linked the account to Marcoulier after reviewing audio recordings and digital communications obtained during the inquiry.
In those recordings, the individual allegedly described plans to carry out mass violence at a synagogue after deployment, including statements about using a firearm and targeting Jewish people.
Federal Authorities Condemn Threats
Prosecutors say the messages included explicit references to violent intent and expressed antisemitic ideology. The Justice Department emphasized that threats against religious communities are treated as serious federal crimes.
U.S. Attorney Zachary A. Keller said such threats target fundamental rights, including religious freedom, and stressed that law enforcement acted quickly after receiving the tip.
Officials also credited the FBI’s rapid response and monitoring systems for helping identify and detain the suspect before any attack could occur.
Arrest and Legal Proceedings
Marcoulier is currently being held by the U.S. Marshals Service pending further court proceedings. A detention hearing is scheduled for later this week.
If convicted, he faces up to five years in federal prison under the charge of transmitting threats across state lines.
Authorities have not disclosed whether additional charges are being considered.
Military Base Under Scrutiny
The case has drawn attention due to Marcoulier’s assignment at Fort Polk, a major U.S. Army training installation in Louisiana. Military officials have not publicly commented on the investigation or the soldier’s status within the armed forces.
Online Extremism Concerns Highlighted
The case adds to growing concern among law enforcement agencies about the role of encrypted and semi-private online platforms in facilitating extremist rhetoric and violent planning.
Officials continue to monitor digital spaces for potential threats, particularly those targeting religious or ethnic groups.
