Oregon man charged with the murders of four women is now accused of killing a fifth

A man accused of killing multiple women in the Portland area is now facing a fifth murder charge, marking a major escalation in a case that has drawn widespread attention and earlier fears of a possible serial killer targeting young women in the region.

Jesse Calhoun was arraigned Wednesday in a Portland courtroom on a new second-degree murder charge connected to the 2023 death of 22-year-old Ashley Real. His defense attorney entered a not guilty plea on his behalf as family members of victims looked on.

Fifth Murder Charge Added to Ongoing Case

Prosecutors allege Calhoun is now responsible for the deaths of five women, along with multiple counts of abuse of a corpse. The latest indictment expands an already extensive case involving killings that occurred across the Portland metropolitan area over several months in early 2023.

The victims include Kristin Smith, Charity Perry, Bridget Webster, Joanna Speaks, and Ashley Real. Their remains were discovered in various remote locations across northwestern Oregon and southwestern Washington, within a roughly 100-mile radius.

Case That Sparked Serial Killer Fears

The discovery of multiple bodies in wooded areas, culverts, and rural sites in early 2023 triggered widespread concern that a serial offender may have been targeting young women in the Portland region. Authorities later linked the deaths to Calhoun through a series of indictments issued between 2024 and 2025.

Court records indicate that the most recent charge stems from evidence connected to Ashley Real’s death, which investigators say occurred in 2023.

Family Members Speak in Court

During Wednesday’s hearing at the Multnomah County Detention Center, several victims’ relatives attended the proceedings. Emotional statements followed the arraignment, with families describing ongoing grief and relief that the suspect remains in custody.

Ashley Real’s family described her as kind-hearted and expressed anguish over her death, while also acknowledging a sense of security knowing the suspect is no longer free. Other families echoed similar sentiments, highlighting the shared trauma across those affected.

Prior Allegations and Criminal History

Authorities say Calhoun was arrested in June 2023 on unrelated parole violations before being formally charged in connection with the killings. At the time of his arrest, he was already serving a sentence for previous offenses, including assaulting a police officer and other violent crimes.

He had previously been released early from prison in 2021 under a wildfire firefighting work program, but was later returned to custody. Oregon Governor Tina Kotek later revoked that commutation in 2023 as the murder investigation intensified.

Investigation Continues as Trial Awaits

Prosecutors have not yet set a trial date. Calhoun remains in custody at the Multnomah County Detention Center as legal proceedings continue.

Authorities have not publicly confirmed a final motive, and defense attorneys have declined to comment on the latest allegations.
