Former FBI Director James Comey says he has ‘complete faith’ in the judicial system amid seashell case

Former FBI Director James Comey has expressed strong confidence in the U.S. judicial system as he faces an ongoing federal case linked to a controversial social media post involving seashells arranged in the numbers “86 47.”

Speaking in a televised interview, Comey said he has “complete faith in our judicial system,” describing it as a critical pillar of American democracy and the rule of law amid rising political tensions surrounding his indictment.

Controversy over Instagram post

The case centers on an Instagram photo posted in 2025 that showed seashells arranged to display the numbers “86 47.” Prosecutors allege the image represented a threat against the president, arguing that the term “86” can imply violent intent.

Federal prosecutors claim the post constituted a “serious expression of intent to do harm,” while supporters of Comey argue the interpretation is being mischaracterized.

The dispute has drawn attention due to conflicting meanings of the term “86,” which is commonly used in the hospitality industry to mean removing or running out of an item, not violence.

Legal arguments and political debate

Officials from the Justice Department have said the indictment is part of a broader investigation involving additional evidence beyond the social media post.

Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche stated that the case is based on a wider set of findings presented to a grand jury over several months, though details have not been publicly disclosed.

Comey, however, has criticized public commentary surrounding the case and urged officials involved to refrain from discussing it outside of court proceedings.

Comey defends rule of law

During his remarks, Comey emphasized the importance of judicial independence, describing the courts as the strongest functioning branch of government in the United States.

He stated that the judiciary remains essential for maintaining constitutional order and ensuring accountability under the rule of law.

Comey also declined to address specific legal details of the case, citing ongoing proceedings.

Broader political implications

The case has become part of a wider political debate involving accusations of selective or retaliatory prosecution. Comey has previously argued that targeting political opponents undermines democratic institutions and weakens public trust in the justice system.

He pointed to earlier dismissed cases involving other political figures as examples of what he described as politically motivated legal actions.

Supporters of the administration, however, maintain that the case is based on legitimate legal concerns and evidence presented during the investigation process.

Ongoing legal proceedings

The case against Comey remains active, and no final judgment has been reached. Legal experts say the outcome could have broader implications for how courts interpret intent in digital communications and social media symbolism.
