Former politician and TV personality Ann Widdecombe was killed in ‘targeted attack,’ U.K. police say

London, July 15, 2026: British counterterrorism authorities have confirmed that the killing of former Member of Parliament and television personality Ann Widdecombe is being treated as a targeted attack, while investigators continue to examine the motive behind the incident.

A 28-year-old man remains in police custody after being arrested on suspicion of murder and terrorism-related offenses. Investigators have obtained an extended detention warrant under the U.K.’s Terrorism Act, allowing additional time to question the suspect as inquiries continue.

Laurence Taylor, head of the National Counter Terrorism Policing network, told reporters that evidence collected during the investigation indicates the attack was deliberately planned. However, officials have not yet determined whether political, ideological, or personal motives were involved.

“We are continuing to examine the planning, preparation, and circumstances surrounding this attack,” Taylor said, adding that investigators are working to establish the full motive.

The case was transferred to specialist counterterrorism officers after new evidence emerged during the investigation. Initially, local police stated there was no indication that the incident was linked to terrorism or political motives, but subsequent findings prompted a significant change in the direction of the inquiry.

Devon and Cornwall Police and Crime Commissioner Alison Hernandez defended the initial response, explaining that criminal investigations often evolve as additional evidence becomes available.

According to investigators, Widdecombe was believed to have been attacked around midday on Wednesday at her rural residence near Haytor, on the edge of Dartmoor National Park in southwest England. She missed a scheduled television interview later that day, raising concerns before she was discovered dead at her home the following day.

Authorities have not released the official cause of death, stating only that the 78-year-old suffered severe injuries. Police have described the incident as a violent assault carried out inside her home.

The suspect was arrested in South Yorkshire, approximately 200 miles from the crime scene. Detectives carried out extensive searches at properties connected to the suspect, where they reportedly recovered evidence suggesting advance planning. Officials have declined to reveal further details because the investigation remains active.

The individual was initially detained on suspicion of murder before investigators uncovered additional evidence that led to further arrest on allegations relating to the preparation and commission of terrorist acts. His identity has not been made public as no formal charges have been filed.

Ann Widdecombe served as a Conservative Member of Parliament from 1987 until 2010. During her parliamentary career, she held several government positions, including serving as prisons minister under former Prime Minister John Major.

Following her departure from frontline politics, Widdecombe became a familiar face on British television through appearances on popular reality programs such as Strictly Come Dancing and Celebrity Big Brother. She later joined the Brexit Party, serving briefly as a Member of the European Parliament before the United Kingdom’s departure from the European Union. In recent years, she was associated with Reform UK, regularly appearing in media discussions on political and public policy issues.

The killing has reignited concerns over the safety and security of public figures in the United Kingdom. The country has experienced heightened security measures for elected officials following the murders of Labour MP Jo Cox in 2016 and Conservative MP Sir David Amess in 2021, both of which prompted major reviews of protections for politicians.

Authorities have appealed for anyone with information related to the investigation to contact police as inquiries continue.
