Washington National Opera Exits Kennedy Center Following Trump Renaming Controversy

The Washington National Opera (WNO) has announced it will leave the Kennedy Center after decades of performances, marking the latest fallout from the Trump administration’s controversial renaming of the iconic venue.

“To ensure fiscal prudence and maintain a balanced budget, the WNO will reduce its spring season and relocate performances to new venues,” the company said in a Friday statement. “This decision prioritizes the long-term interests of the WNO following an amicable transition.” The opera company added that it will announce its new performance spaces in the coming weeks.

Since the Kennedy Center opened in 1971, the WNO has been its resident opera company. In its statement, the organization noted that the affiliation with the center “was never intended to be permanent.”

A Kennedy Center spokesperson said the separation was “a financially challenging relationship” and represented the “best path forward for both organizations,” citing the need to maintain the financial stability of the newly renamed Trump-Kennedy Center.

While WNO did not explicitly cite politics as the reason for its departure, the move comes amid growing controversy surrounding the center. In February, former President Donald Trump announced via Truth Social that he had removed board members who did not align with his vision for the arts, later appointing himself chair. In December, the board officially added Trump’s name to the center, renaming it the Trump-Kennedy Center.

The renaming has sparked backlash across the arts community. Musicians such as Béla Fleck have canceled performances, and composer Stephen Schwartz, known for Wicked, said hosting a gala at the venue “has now become an ideological statement.” Members of the Kennedy family have also criticized the change. Former Representative Joseph Kennedy III called it a violation of federal law, comparing it to renaming the Lincoln Memorial.

The name change is now facing legal challenges. Representative Joyce Beatty (D-Ohio) filed a lawsuit, arguing that the renaming “is a flagrant violation of the rule of law and flies in the face of our constitutional order.”

The WNO’s departure highlights the intersection of politics and the arts as the Kennedy Center navigates its new identity under Trump’s leadership, raising questions about the future of cultural institutions and artistic independence in politically charged environments.
