The European Union and Australia have finalized a long-awaited free trade agreement, marking a significant breakthrough after years of stalled negotiations. Alongside the economic pact, both sides also unveiled a new defense partnership aimed at strengthening cooperation on global security challenges.
The agreement was formally endorsed during a ceremony in Canberra, where Ursula von der Leyen met with Anthony Albanese. The deal concludes negotiations that began in 2018 but collapsed in 2023 over disagreements on agricultural access and product naming rights.
Trade Deal Signals Shift in Global Alliances
The renewed agreement comes at a time when both parties are seeking to diversify trade relationships and reduce dependence on major economies like China and the United States. Ongoing global tariff tensions have pushed countries to secure more stable and predictable economic partnerships.

Under the deal, tariffs will be eliminated on several major Australian exports, including wine, seafood, and horticultural products. The EU has also agreed to introduce limited quotas for Australian red meat, with more than half of the allocated volume exempt from duties.
One notable provision addresses the long-standing dispute over product labeling. Australian producers will be required to phase out the use of the term “prosecco” for their sparkling wines within a decade, recognizing its traditional association with European regions.
In return, the EU is expected to benefit from improved access to critical raw materials such as lithium and tungsten, which are essential for emerging technologies and green energy transitions.
Defense Partnership Expands Cooperation
In addition to trade, both sides announced a new defense framework aimed at enhancing collaboration in key areas such as maritime security, cybersecurity, counterterrorism, and tackling disinformation threats.
The partnership also reaffirms joint support for Ukraine amid its ongoing conflict with Russia, underlining a shared stance on global security and international law.
Furthermore, discussions are set to begin on Australia’s potential association with the EU’s flagship research and innovation program, Horizon Europe.
