Nepal has sworn in its youngest prime minister, Balendra Shah, marking a dramatic political shift following a landslide election victory and months of public unrest driven by youth movements.
The 35-year-old leader, popularly known as “Balen,” officially took the oath of office on Friday after being appointed by President Ram Chandra Paudel. His party, the Rastriya Swatantra Party, secured nearly two-thirds of seats in the House of Representatives during the March 5 elections.
A New Era in Nepali Politics
Shah’s rise signals a major break from traditional political leadership in Nepal, where established parties have long dominated. His victory reflects widespread public frustration over corruption, governance failures, and persistent political instability.
A former structural engineer and rapper turned politician, Shah first gained national prominence as mayor of Kathmandu. His appeal grew further during last year’s youth-led protests, which led to the collapse of the previous government.
Ceremony Blends Tradition and Modern Politics
The swearing-in ceremony was marked by a blend of state protocol and religious tradition. Hindu rituals, including the ceremonial blowing of conches, were performed alongside chants by priests and Buddhist lamas.
The timing of the oath was carefully chosen based on astrological calculations, coinciding with the Hindu festival of Ram Navami—a day considered highly auspicious in the predominantly Hindu nation.
Youth Movement Drives Political Change
Shah’s ascent comes in the wake of a powerful молодеж-driven uprising in September that reshaped the country’s political landscape. While not directly involved in the protests, he openly समर्थ the movement, which was largely led by Generation Z activists demanding reform.
The unrest, which turned violent in parts, resulted in dozens of deaths and ultimately forced the previous administration from power.
Strong Mandate, Significant Challenges
With a commanding parliamentary majority, Shah now faces the challenge of delivering on promises of reform and stability. His administration is expected to prioritize anti-corruption measures, economic recovery, and institutional reforms.
However, analysts warn that managing high public expectations while navigating Nepal’s complex political system will test the new leader’s capabilities.
Regional Support and Expectations
Regional leaders have welcomed Shah’s appointment. Narendra Modi congratulated him, expressing hope for stronger ties between India and Nepal.
Shah’s leadership is widely seen as a reflection of a broader generational shift in South Asian politics, where younger leaders are increasingly gaining influence.
As Nepal enters this new political chapter, attention will focus on whether its youngest prime minister can translate popular support into lasting change.
