Jimmy Lai convicted by Hong Kong court in landmark national security trial

Pro-democracy activist and media mogul Jimmy Lai, 78, was convicted Monday on charges of colluding with foreign forces and publishing seditious materials, marking one of the highest-profile cases under Hong Kong’s national security law. Lai, who has pleaded not guilty and faces life in prison, was a central figure in the 2019 pro-democracy protests.

Charges and Verdict

The court found Lai guilty of:

  • Two counts of colluding with foreign forces under the national security law, and
  • One count of conspiracy to publish seditious materials, under colonial-era legislation.

Judges cited Lai’s meetings with senior U.S. officials, including Vice President Mike Pence, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, and National Security Adviser John Bolton, as evidence that he lobbied Washington to “bring down” the Chinese government. They also referenced articles in his now-defunct pro-democracy newspaper, Apple Daily, as inciting hatred against the Hong Kong and Chinese governments.

Judge Esther Toh stated that Lai’s intent had been to destabilize the Chinese government, “even though the ultimate cost was the sacrifice of the interests of the people” of Hong Kong and China.

International and Domestic Reactions

  • John Lee, Hong Kong’s top leader, welcomed the verdict, praising the court for upholding the law.
  • Western governments and rights groups condemned the conviction as politically motivated. Human Rights Watch called it “both cruel and a travesty of justice,” and the Committee to Protect Journalists said it underscores Hong Kong’s “utter contempt for press freedom.”
  • Lai’s son, Sebastien Lai, urged the U.K. to take stronger action, calling for his father’s release.

The trial has been seen as a test of Hong Kong’s judicial independence and press freedom, both promised under the “one country, two systems” framework. Public interest remained high, with people lining up overnight for court access.

Health Concerns and Detention

Lai has spent nearly five years in solitary confinement since his arrest in 2020 and suffers from diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart palpitations. Authorities say he has received adequate medical care and is housed separately for safety.

Broader Context

The verdict comes amid a continued crackdown on dissent:

  • The Democratic Party, Hong Kong’s last major opposition party, disbanded this week.
  • Legislative elections under “patriots only” rules have sidelined opposition voices.
  • Other high-profile convictions include journalists from Stand News and 47 pro-democracy figures charged with subversion, most of whom were convicted or pleaded guilty.

The case solidifies the impact of Beijing’s national security law in curbing open political dissent and controlling Hong Kong’s media landscape, while also drawing international scrutiny over press freedom and human rights.
