Former Maine Senate President Troy Jackson has emerged as the overwhelming favorite to secure the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate after several prominent rivals suspended their campaigns ahead of the party’s state convention.
The rapid consolidation of support positions Jackson to challenge longtime Republican Senator Susan Collins in one of the nation’s closely watched Senate contests.
Key Democratic Candidates Withdraw
Over the weekend, several leading Democratic hopefuls ended their campaigns, including Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows, former public health official Dr. Nirav Shah, entrepreneur Dan Kleban, and former congressional staffer Jordan Wood.
Their departures followed county delegate elections, where Jackson’s supporters secured an overwhelming majority of convention delegates, effectively giving him a commanding advantage before the official nomination vote.
Although delegates are not legally bound to support Jackson, the results make his nomination highly likely at the upcoming state Democratic convention.
Strong Delegate Performance
Jackson’s campaign reported winning support from nearly all available convention delegates during county meetings across Maine.
The decisive outcome reflected strong grassroots organization and broad backing from Democratic activists throughout the state.
Speaking after the delegate victories, Jackson thanked both supporters and former opponents, emphasizing that defeating the Republican incumbent would require party unity.
Party Unites Behind Jackson
Following his withdrawal, Dr. Nirav Shah endorsed Jackson, calling on Democrats to unite ahead of the general election.
Shah said the party’s focus should now shift toward defeating Susan Collins rather than continuing internal competition.
Dan Kleban also announced his support for Jackson, saying his priority remains helping Democrats win the Senate seat in November.
Jordan Wood, who had initially planned to continue campaigning, later reversed course and suspended his campaign while endorsing Jackson as well.
Bellows Returns Focus to Secretary of State Role
Shenna Bellows announced her withdrawal earlier in the day, saying she intends to devote her full attention to her responsibilities as Maine’s Secretary of State.
In her statement, Bellows cited ongoing national political challenges as the reason for remaining focused on her current office rather than continuing her Senate campaign.
Race Reshaped After Previous Nominee Withdrew
The Democratic nomination process was reopened after former nominee Graham Platner suspended his campaign following allegations of sexual assault.
Platner denied the accusations, but his withdrawal prompted the Democratic Party to organize a new nominating process to select a replacement candidate.
Jackson entered the race shortly afterward and quickly built momentum through an extensive delegate outreach effort.
Jackson Looks Ahead to General Election
A former logger, labor union member, and longtime state legislator, Jackson has highlighted his working-class background throughout the campaign.
