KYIV, Ukraine — Russia carried out a large-scale missile and drone attack on Ukraine’s capital early Sunday, killing at least one person and injuring dozens, according to Ukrainian officials. The overnight assault damaged residential buildings, schools, and civilian infrastructure across Kyiv.
Authorities said the attack began shortly after 1 a.m. local time, when explosions rocked multiple districts following air raid alerts issued by Ukraine’s air force. Residents were urged to take shelter as waves of drones and missiles targeted the city.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed that a nine-story residential building in the Shevchenkivskyi district was struck, resulting in one fatality. Emergency crews were deployed immediately to extinguish fires and search for survivors trapped under debris.
In another incident, several people were reportedly trapped inside a school air raid shelter after its entrance was blocked by rubble from a nearby strike. Officials also said additional civilians may be stuck in a business center shelter in the same district.
The Kyiv city military administration reported at least 20 injuries within the capital, while three more people were wounded in surrounding areas. Rescue operations were continuing as authorities assessed the full scale of damage.
Ukrainian officials had warned earlier that Russia could prepare a strike involving advanced missile systems, including the Oreshnik intermediate-range ballistic missile, based on intelligence reports. However, there was no immediate confirmation that such a missile was used in the latest attack.
Russia has previously deployed the Oreshnik system in strikes on Ukraine, with Moscow claiming it is extremely difficult to intercept due to its high speed. Ukraine has not independently verified those claims.
The latest assault comes amid heightened tensions following recent battlefield developments and renewed warnings from Ukrainian leadership about possible escalations in Russian military operations.
Officials continue to monitor the situation as emergency services work through damaged areas and search for additional victims.
