MOSCOW — Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov, a senior officer in Russia’s armed forces, was killed Monday when a bomb detonated under his car in Moscow, officials confirmed. Russian investigators are examining whether the attack may have been orchestrated by Ukrainian intelligence services.
Sarvarov, 56, led the operational training directorate of Russia’s General Staff. According to the Russian Investigative Committee, the explosive device was planted beneath his vehicle on Yasenevaya Street in southern Moscow and detonated in the morning hours.
“Investigators are pursuing multiple lines of inquiry regarding this murder,” said spokesperson Svetlana Petrenko. “One theory under consideration is that the act was carried out by Ukrainian intelligence agencies.”
NBC News has reached out to the Ukrainian government for comment. No additional details about suspects or arrests have been released at this time.
This remains a developing story, and authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the explosion
