Ichikawa, Japan — Punch, the Japanese macaque who captured international attention after finding comfort in an orangutan plush toy, has celebrated his first birthday with thousands of messages from admirers around the world.
The young monkey, who was once known for clinging tightly to the stuffed animal during a difficult start in life, has now grown into an active member of his troop at the Ichikawa City Zoological and Botanical Garden near Tokyo.
Although Punch no longer carries the plush toy everywhere, he continues to attract visitors who followed his emotional journey from an abandoned infant to a healthy young monkey.
From Orphaned Baby to Internet Sensation
Punch was abandoned by his mother shortly after birth, reportedly because she was exhausted. Zoo staff stepped in to provide around-the-clock care and introduced the soft toy to help the newborn macaque develop his natural gripping skills.
The plush orangutan became a source of comfort for Punch during his early months. Images of him holding onto the toy quickly spread online, turning him into a global internet sensation.
Zoo officials said the story touched people because it showed Punch’s struggle to survive and adapt while searching for acceptance among other monkeys.
Thousands Celebrate Punch’s First Birthday
As Punch turned one year old, fans sent approximately 2,500 birthday cards and messages from Japan and other countries.
The zoo created a special birthday exhibition featuring photographs, videos, and messages documenting Punch’s growth. Visitors were able to see how the tiny orphaned monkey developed from a vulnerable infant into a playful young animal.
Zoo director Takashi Yasunaga said Punch’s journey was memorable for everyone involved, especially the keepers who cared for him during his most difficult days.
Punch Finds His Place Among Other Monkeys
After about six months of special care, Punch was introduced into the zoo’s monkey enclosure, where he joined a group of around 50 other macaques.
The transition was challenging at first. When some monkeys rejected him, Punch returned to his stuffed companion for comfort. His determination to become part of the group inspired thousands of supporters online.
The hashtag #HangInTherePunch gained popularity as fans encouraged the young monkey during his adjustment period.
Today, Punch plays and interacts with other monkeys and is no longer easily recognized as the same fragile baby who once needed a toy for reassurance.

Kumi Ishizawa, a visitor from Kobe, said watching Punch overcome challenges encouraged her during her own recovery from illness. She described finally meeting him at the zoo as a special and emotional moment.
Another fan, Yeye Lights, became a regular visitor after learning about Punch through her daughter. She even celebrated his birthday with friends and praised the zoo staff for their dedication.
