German conservative politician resigns after pressure over surrogate baby

CDU Figure Steps Down Following Criticism Over Family Decision That Conflicted With Party Policy

Jens Spahn, a prominent figure in Germany’s conservative political leadership, has resigned from his parliamentary role after facing criticism over his decision to become a parent through a surrogate mother in the United States.

Spahn, 46, who served as parliamentary leader for Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and its Bavarian sister party, the Christian Social Union (CSU), announced his resignation on Saturday. He said his personal decision to build a family with his husband had created a conflict with his political responsibilities.

“In recent days, I have realised that my personal happiness — starting a family with my husband and becoming a father — is incompatible with my political office,” Spahn wrote in his resignation statement.

The controversy emerged after reports confirmed that Spahn and his husband welcomed a child born through surrogacy in the United States. Surrogacy is banned in Germany, although German law does not prohibit parents from raising a child born through a surrogate abroad.

The issue attracted criticism because Spahn’s political party has maintained a position opposing surrogacy within Germany. At a CDU party conference earlier this year, members voted to continue supporting the country’s restrictions on the practice.

Following the announcement, several voices within conservative circles questioned whether Spahn could continue representing the party while making a personal choice that appeared inconsistent with its official stance.

Spahn has been a leading figure in German politics for years, previously serving as health minister and holding senior roles within the CDU. His resignation highlights ongoing debates in Germany over family policy, reproductive rights, and the relationship between personal choices and political positions.
