North Carolina mail carrier kidnapped and killed while on her route, authorities say

Authorities in North Carolina have charged a 56-year-old man with kidnapping and murder following the death of a U.S. Postal Service employee who was attacked while delivering mail on her assigned route.

The victim, Brandi Reynolds, 35, was reported missing during her workday on Friday before being found dead later that afternoon. Investigators confirmed she was carrying out her mail delivery duties when the incident occurred.

According to officials, William Craig Durham, 56, of Roaring River, was arrested the same day and has been charged with first-degree kidnapping and first-degree murder. Court records allege that Reynolds was unlawfully restrained and taken from one location to another without her consent before she was killed.

Investigators stated that the alleged kidnapping was carried out with the intent to terrorize the victim and inflict serious bodily harm. Authorities have not released details about the exact circumstances of the killing, including whether a weapon was used or what may have motivated the attack.

A judge in Wilkes County ordered Durham to remain in custody without bond during an initial court appearance, citing his extensive criminal history. State prison records indicate he has previous convictions that include second-degree kidnapping, assault, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

The investigation is being conducted jointly by the United States Postal Inspection Service, the Wilkes County Sheriff’s Office, and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, as officials continue gathering evidence surrounding the case.

Reynolds’ death has deeply affected the local community and the U.S. Postal Service. Postal officials expressed condolences to her family, friends, and coworkers, describing the loss as a heartbreaking tragedy for the agency.

Beyond her career, Reynolds was the mother of two young daughters. The family had already experienced significant tragedy after the death of her husband, Brent Reynolds, in a vehicle crash in December 2025. Friends and relatives described the children as the center of both parents’ lives.

Her obituary remembers Reynolds as a devoted mother who is survived by her daughters, mother, sisters, nieces, and nephews.

Authorities have not announced whether additional charges or information will be released as the investigation continues.
