Pakistan’s security forces have carried out a coordinated ground operation along the Afghanistan border followed by targeted airstrikes against suspected militant hideouts, killing 29 fighters, according to government officials.
The operation was confirmed on Sunday by Pakistan’s information ministry, which said it was conducted in response to a series of recent militant attacks across the country.
Targeted Action Along the Afghan Border
Officials said the military operation focused on border regions believed to be used as safe havens by insurgent groups, including factions of the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan.
In a statement posted on social media platform X, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar said the strikes were “calibrated” and aimed at dismantling militant infrastructure operating near the frontier.
The government reported that 29 militants were killed during the combined ground and aerial actions, though no independent verification has been provided.
Karachi Attack Preceded the Military Response
The operation came just one day after militants attacked a paramilitary Rangers compound in Karachi, Pakistan’s largest city and financial hub. Officials said three soldiers were killed in the assault, while security forces killed several attackers during the response.
One of the arrested suspects was identified by Pakistani authorities as an Afghan national in injured condition, according to military statements.
A breakaway faction of the Pakistani Taliban, Jamaat-ul-Ahrar, later claimed responsibility for the Karachi attack.
Pakistan-Afghanistan Tensions Intensify
Relations between Islamabad and Kabul have remained strained since the Afghan Taliban returned to power in 2021, leading to repeated accusations from Pakistan that Afghan territory is being used to shelter militants targeting its security forces.
The Afghan Taliban government has consistently denied those claims.
Sunday’s strikes mark another escalation in a cycle of cross-border military actions that has intensified in recent months, including previous Pakistani airstrikes inside Afghanistan targeting suspected militant bases.
Ongoing Cycle of Retaliation
The latest operation follows a period of heightened violence that has seen hundreds of casualties on both sides of the border since earlier this year. Multiple rounds of diplomatic talks, including mediation efforts involving China, have so far failed to secure a lasting ceasefire.
Earlier negotiations had briefly reduced tensions, but recent attacks have renewed concerns about a broader regional escalation.
Regional Security Concerns Persist
Security analysts warn that continued tit-for-tat strikes risk further destabilizing the already volatile border region. Pakistan has maintained that militant groups operating from Afghanistan are responsible for a growing number of attacks inside its territory, particularly against police and military personnel.
Kabul rejects these accusations, insisting it does not allow its territory to be used for cross-border attacks.

With no immediate response from Afghan authorities and violence continuing on both sides of the border, tensions between the neighboring countries appear set to remain high. Further diplomatic engagement is expected, but the situation on the ground suggests the risk of continued escalation remains significant.
