California authorities say at least 117 dogs were discovered dead during a search of an animal rescue facility in Humboldt County, marking one of the most disturbing animal cruelty investigations in the state in recent years.
Officials described the site as a “horrific scene,” as forensic teams continue examining remains found at the property linked to Miranda’s Rescue.
Mass Discovery During Search Warrant Execution
The remains were uncovered during a court-authorized search of the facility in Fortuna, where investigators had previously suspected possible animal abuse, fraud, and neglect.
According to the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office, investigators found 117 sets of canine remains in various stages of decomposition across multiple burial sites on the property.
Authorities also recovered nearly two dozen skulls, hundreds of bones, and approximately 600 dog collars, suggesting a large number of animals had passed through or been kept at the facility.
Evidence of Possible Gunfire Found
Preliminary forensic examinations of dozens of the recovered animals indicate that many showed signs consistent with bullet fragments, raising concerns that some dogs may have been killed by gunfire.
Officials said forensic veterinarians were able to examine part of the remains on-site, while additional analysis is ongoing to identify causes of death and match remains to records.
Investigators are also attempting to identify animals through microchips and other available records.
Long-Running Investigation Into Rescue Organization
Authorities said the investigation began earlier in the year after allegations surfaced involving fraud, cruelty, and the disappearance of animals surrendered to the rescue.
A previous search in May resulted in the seizure of evidence and raised concerns that a significant number of animals taken in by the organization could not be accounted for.
The latest search warrant allowed investigators to excavate parts of the property, where suspected mass burial sites were uncovered.
Rescue Founder Responds as Investigation Continues
The founder of the facility, identified as Shannon Miranda, has not been charged in connection with the case. Officials said no arrests or criminal charges have been announced so far.
In a public statement released earlier, Miranda acknowledged past incidents involving animals at the rescue but maintained that decisions such as euthanasia were made under claims of public safety or animal welfare concerns.
Investigators have not verified those claims, and authorities emphasized that the case remains active and ongoing.
Officials Warn Investigation Will Be Lengthy
Law enforcement officials cautioned that the scale of the discovery means the investigation will take considerable time. Forensic experts are continuing to catalog remains, analyze evidence, and determine whether criminal charges are warranted.
Sheriff officials said the case will require a “complete, impartial, and legally sound investigation” before any conclusions are reached.

The discovery has sparked shock and concern among animal welfare advocates and local residents, many of whom are calling for stricter oversight of rescue organizations and accountability if wrongdoing is confirmed.
