SHANDUR PASS, Pakistan — At an altitude of around 3,700 meters (12,000 feet), the rugged Shandur Pass in northern Pakistan once again came alive with one of the world’s most unique sporting traditions as the annual Shandur Polo Festival 2026 drew thousands of spectators to the “roof of the world.”
Set against snowcapped peaks and wide alpine skies, the three-day event transformed the remote plateau into a vibrant celebration of sport, culture, and community, reaffirming its reputation as the world’s highest polo ground.
A Historic Ground Where Tradition Meets Sport
The Shandur Polo Field, located in Gilgit-Baltistan, hosted intense freestyle polo matches that showcased a centuries-old version of the game still preserved in Pakistan’s mountainous north. Unlike modern professional polo, the freestyle format played at Shandur is known for its raw pace, minimal rules, and deep cultural roots.
Horse riders from the Chitral and Gilgit-Baltistan regions competed in a highly anticipated final, continuing a long-standing rivalry that has defined the festival for generations.
Gilgit-Baltistan Claims Victory After a Decade
In a thrilling final match, the Gilgit-Baltistan team defeated Chitral 6–5, securing the championship title after more than ten years.
The closely contested game, lasting nearly an hour, ended with emotional celebrations as players and supporters waved flags, embraced, and cheered their team’s return to victory. The result sparked widespread jubilation across the region, highlighting the strong local pride tied to the sport.
A Festival Set in the Clouds
Beyond the action on the field, the festival created a temporary mountain settlement where visitors experienced life in one of Pakistan’s most remote landscapes.
