Authorities in Washington state have confirmed the death of reality television personality Matt Brown after his body was recovered from a river following a multi-day search operation.
The Okanogan County Sheriff’s Office said the body was found on Saturday in the Okanogan River by a private search team assisting in the effort. The county coroner later formally identified the remains.
Officials said the cause and manner of death remain under investigation.
Discovery Made After Multi-Agency Search Effort
Law enforcement authorities had been searching the area after a report earlier in the week that a man was seen sitting in shallow water in the river near Oroville in north-central Washington.
According to officials, a witness reported speaking briefly with the individual before turning away and then seeing him face down in the water, drifting downstream.
A coordinated search effort involving local responders, sheriff’s deputies, and volunteer groups was launched shortly after the report was made.
Family Confirms Identification
Members of Brown’s family confirmed the news on social media, with his brother Noah Brown stating that he was present when the body was recovered and identified.
Another brother, Bear Brown, also posted tributes online, referencing his sibling’s long-standing personal struggles and expressing shock over the outcome of the search.
The Brown family is known for its role in the Discovery Channel reality series Alaskan Bush People, which documented their life in remote wilderness conditions beginning in 2014.
Background on Matt Brown
Matt Brown appeared on the Discovery series from its launch until 2019, gaining public attention as part of the Brown family’s unconventional lifestyle in Alaska and later Washington state.
During and after his time on the show, he was open about battling alcohol addiction and personal challenges, which were occasionally addressed by family members in public statements.
The family patriarch, Billy Brown, died in 2021.
Investigation Ongoing
Authorities have not yet determined whether any criminal activity was involved. A firearm was reportedly found near the area where the individual was last seen, but investigators have not confirmed its relevance to the case.
The sheriff’s office emphasized that the investigation is ongoing and more information will be released once the coroner completes a full report.
