A wrongful death lawsuit filed in Oregon alleges that an 18-year-old died from a severe infection after doctors at a hospital allegedly stitched his arm wound without properly removing debris, leading to a rapidly spreading infection and eventual sepsis.
The case involves Ethan Cantrell, who died in August 2024 following treatment at Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center after suffering a puncture injury to his arm.
Lawsuit Alleges Wound Was Closed With Debris Inside
According to the lawsuit, Cantrell injured his arm while cutting wood and was treated in the emergency department, where the wound was allegedly irrigated and stitched closed. The family claims that foreign material—including organic debris—remained inside the injury when it was sutured.
The complaint states that imaging did not reveal visible foreign objects, but later evidence suggested that material such as wood fragments and plant matter may not be easily detectable through standard X-rays.
Rapid Deterioration After Initial Treatment
Following discharge, Cantrell reportedly developed increasing pain, swelling, and fever within hours. His condition worsened over the next two days, prompting repeated contact with the hospital and a return visit to the emergency room.
During his second evaluation, doctors reportedly suspected a deeper infection, but the lawsuit alleges that initial treatment adjustments were not made immediately, despite signs of worsening symptoms.
Severe Infection Discovered Too Late
As his condition deteriorated, medical staff eventually reopened the wound and removed multiple pieces of organic material, according to the filing. Cultures later confirmed a serious bacterial infection.
Cantrell was then transferred to Oregon Health & Science University Hospital, where doctors identified a life-threatening necrotizing soft tissue infection. He underwent multiple surgeries, including an arm amputation, but later died from complications.
Allegations of Medical Negligence
The lawsuit, filed by the teen’s father in Multnomah County Circuit Court, names the hospital and treating physicians as defendants, alleging negligence in diagnosis, wound care, and infection management.
The family is seeking $100 million in damages, citing loss of life and emotional harm to relatives.
A representative for the hospital’s health system said it intends to respond through the legal process and extended condolences to the family.

The case has drawn attention to emergency treatment procedures for puncture wounds, particularly those involving organic material that may not be visible on imaging tests.
