Former NBA player Damon Jones pleads guilty to $10 million sports betting and poker scams

Former NBA guard Damon Jones has pleaded guilty in federal court to charges tied to a multimillion-dollar illegal sports betting and rigged poker operation, marking a major development in a widening gambling investigation involving professional basketball figures.

The case, heard in Brooklyn federal court, centers on allegations that Jones used insider knowledge from his NBA connections to help gamblers and co-conspirators profit from nonpublic information.

Guilty Plea in Federal Court

Jones, 49, who played 11 seasons in the NBA across multiple teams, pleaded guilty to two counts of wire fraud conspiracy. The court was told that the schemes generated more than $10 million in illicit gains.

During Tuesday’s hearing, Jones acknowledged his role in the operation and admitted to sharing confidential information obtained through his basketball network. He also expressed remorse for his actions and apologized to the league and his peers.

Sentencing has been scheduled for January 6, with prosecutors recommending a prison term ranging from approximately two to six years depending on the charges and counts considered.

Insider Betting Scheme Involved NBA Information

According to federal prosecutors, Jones passed on nonpublic injury updates and lineup information to bettors ahead of NBA games. One key example involved a February 2023 matchup between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Milwaukee Bucks.

Prosecutors say Jones warned associates to place wagers on Milwaukee after learning that a prominent Lakers player would not be participating due to injury. Messages presented in court included instructions urging bettors to act quickly before the information became public.

The Bucks went on to win that game, and investigators allege that bets placed using the insider tip generated significant profits for those involved.

Rigged Poker Operation Also Uncovered

In addition to the sports betting scheme, Jones admitted participation in a separate illegal poker operation. Prosecutors say he acted as a “face card” to attract high-stakes gamblers, using his former NBA status to lend credibility to games that were secretly manipulated.

Authorities stated that participants in the poker scheme were deceived into rigged games, resulting in substantial financial losses for unsuspecting players.

Jones told the court he understood the games were manipulated and that his role helped draw wealthy participants into the operation.

Part of Broader Gambling Investigation

The case is part of a larger federal probe into illegal sports betting and gambling networks connected to professional basketball. The investigation has included multiple arrests and allegations involving organized crime figures and individuals linked to the sport.

The inquiry has also drawn attention to the growing risks associated with legalized sports betting in the United States, which has expanded rapidly since a 2018 Supreme Court ruling allowed states to regulate wagering independently.

Rising Concerns Over Insider Access in Sports

Federal prosecutors argue that the case highlights ongoing vulnerabilities in professional sports, where access to injury reports, locker room information, and internal team decisions can be exploited for gambling advantage.

Authorities have emphasized that using confidential team information to influence betting markets undermines the integrity of both legal sportsbooks and professional competition.

Sentencing Ahead

Jones remains free pending sentencing but faces significant prison time under federal guidelines. Prosecutors have recommended a range of penalties depending on the counts involved in each scheme.

His sentencing hearing in January will determine the final outcome of the case, which could include multiple years behind bars.
