Japanese Citizen Freed from Iran Detention, Returns Home Safely as Another Remains in Custody

A Japanese national detained in Iran for several months has safely returned to Japan, government officials confirmed, while efforts continue to secure the release of a second detainee still held in the country.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara announced on Monday that the individual arrived back in Japan in good health. The confirmation followed remarks a day earlier by Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi, who revealed that the detainee had been released last week after being held since 2025.

Release After Diplomatic Efforts

According to Motegi, the individual departed Iran via Azerbaijan before returning home. He noted that the release came after sustained diplomatic engagement with Iranian authorities, including direct communication with Abbas Araghchi.

Japanese officials have not disclosed the identity of the released individual or the circumstances surrounding their detention.

Second Japanese National Still Detained

Kihara confirmed that another Japanese citizen, arrested earlier this year, remains in Iranian custody. However, authorities say the individual is in stable condition, with no immediate concerns regarding their health or safety.

The Japanese government continues to press for their prompt release through diplomatic channels.

Journalist Reportedly Among Detainees

The Committee to Protect Journalists has identified the second detainee as a journalist affiliated with NHK. According to the organization, the journalist was detained in January by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and later transferred to Evin Prison in February.

Japanese officials have not publicly confirmed these details and have refrained from commenting on whether the two cases are related.

Ongoing Diplomatic Engagement

Motegi emphasized that securing the release of the remaining detainee remains a top priority. He added that the government is maintaining close contact with the individual’s family and relevant parties while continuing negotiations with Iranian officials.

The case highlights ongoing diplomatic sensitivities between Japan and Iran, particularly concerning the detention of foreign nationals.
