Kim Yo Jong, the influential sister of Kim Jong Un, has dismissed the possibility of a summit with Japan, warning that talks will not proceed unless Tokyo abandons what she described as “anachronistic” policies.
Her remarks, carried by North Korean state media, come in response to recent comments by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, who expressed a strong desire to meet Kim Jong Un during discussions with Donald Trump in Washington.
Pyongyang Sets Conditions for Dialogue
Kim Yo Jong made clear that any high-level meeting would depend entirely on Japan’s willingness to change its approach toward North Korea. She suggested that Tokyo must first abandon longstanding positions before meaningful dialogue can take place.
While she did not explicitly define what policies she considers outdated, her previous statements indicate that Pyongyang expects Japan to accept North Korea’s nuclear status and refrain from raising sensitive historical issues.
“I don’t want to see the prime minister of Japan coming to Pyongyang,” she said, though she described her remarks as a personal opinion—widely interpreted by analysts as strategic pressure on Tokyo.
Abduction Issue Remains Major Obstacle
