MINNEAPOLIS — Residents of Minneapolis describe a city under siege as thousands of federal immigration officers patrol neighborhoods following the fatal shooting of Renee Nicole Good by a federal agent.
Operation Metro Surge, the Trump administration’s ongoing immigration enforcement initiative, has deployed roughly 3,000 personnel across the Twin Cities, including over 2,000 ICE agents, hundreds of Border Patrol officers, and other federal law enforcement officials. Locals say the scale, intensity, and aggressive tactics of the operation far exceed previous immigration enforcement efforts in larger “blue” cities like Chicago, Los Angeles, and Charlotte.
Neighbors report officers in unmarked vehicles blocking streets, entering retail parking lots and stores, and conducting door-to-door stops, including in areas around Lake Street, Uptown, and Powderhorn. Social media and activist-shared videos show violent arrests, car windows being smashed, and chemical agents sprayed directly at civilians.
“It feels like an invasion,” said a local restaurant owner protesting at the Whipple federal detention facility. “It needs to stop, and people need to know what’s going on.” Residents say the heightened presence has forced temporary business closures and left communities in fear.
Tensions escalated further Wednesday when DHS said an officer fired in self-defense after allegedly being attacked with a snow shovel or broom handle. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey described the city as facing an “impossible situation,” with local police vastly outnumbered by federal agents.
Eyewitnesses describe confrontations between residents and officers, including incidents in which civilians were pepper-sprayed or detained while trying to monitor enforcement operations. Videos circulating online show federal officers asking civilians about their citizenship status and forcibly removing individuals from vehicles.
Community members say protests, honking, and whistle alerts have become common as residents warn neighbors of nearby operations. Many express concern that Minnesota is being specifically targeted politically, a belief echoed by some who cite the city’s diverse population and voting history.
The city has called on ICE to cease its operations immediately, emphasizing support for immigrant and refugee communities. Federal authorities, however, have vowed to continue enforcement efforts, warning that obstruction of officers constitutes a federal crime.
With tensions remaining high, Minneapolis faces a delicate balance between federal enforcement and local calls for restraint, even as residents struggle to navigate life amid the intense and sustained presence of federal agents.
