Anthony Geary, who played Luke Spencer on ‘General Hospital,’ dies at 78

Anthony Geary, the Emmy-winning actor who brought the iconic character Luke Spencer to life on the long-running daytime drama General Hospital, has died at the age of 78. His representatives confirmed the news on Monday. No cause of death was disclosed.

Geary’s passing marks the end of an era for daytime television. For decades, his work helped define the modern soap opera and cemented General Hospital as a cultural phenomenon.

From Utah Roots to Television Stardom

Born Tony Dean Geary in Utah, the actor later adopted the name Anthony, believing it carried a stronger presence for his professional career. In a 2007 interview with the Television Academy Foundation, Geary said the change reflected his desire for a name with “gravitas.”

Drawn to acting from an early age, Geary studied theater at the University of Utah on scholarship before relocating to Los Angeles in the late 1960s. There, he began landing television roles, including guest appearances on All in the Family and recurring work on daytime dramas such as Bright Promise and The Young and the Restless.

Becoming Luke Spencer

Geary’s career changed dramatically in 1978 when General Hospital executive producer and head writer Gloria Monty invited him to audition for a new character named Luke Spencer. Initially hired for a short, 13-week arc, Geary’s performance resonated so strongly with audiences that the role was repeatedly extended.

Luke Spencer quickly evolved into one of the most recognizable characters in soap opera history. Geary remained closely associated with the role for roughly four decades, making Luke a central figure in some of the genre’s most memorable storylines.

The Phenomenon of Luke and Laura

Geary achieved unparalleled fame opposite actress Genie Francis, who portrayed Laura Webber. Together, they formed Luke and Laura, widely regarded as the most iconic couple in daytime television.

Their on-screen wedding in 1981 drew an estimated 30 million viewers, making it the highest-rated episode in American soap opera history—a milestone that remains unmatched.

Following news of Geary’s death, Francis paid tribute to her longtime co-star, writing that working alongside him shaped her career and left a lasting personal bond.

Awards and Legacy

Over the course of his career, Geary won eight Daytime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lead Actor and received nine additional nominations. His performances were often praised for their complexity, wit, and emotional depth, elevating the storytelling standards of daytime television.

Though he stepped away from the role in later years, Geary’s influence on General Hospital and the soap opera genre endures. For millions of viewers, Luke Spencer remains synonymous with romance, rebellion, and reinvention.

Anthony Geary is survived by the legacy of a career that reshaped daytime TV and captivated generations of fans.
