Lane Kiffin Leaves Ole Miss for LSU, Shaking Up College Football Playoff Picture

Lane Kiffin, the head coach who has transformed the Ole Miss Rebels into a top-tier college football program, announced Sunday that he will leave the team to take over as head coach at LSU. The move comes as Ole Miss, ranked seventh nationally, approaches its first College Football Playoff appearance.

“After a lot of prayer and time spent with family, I made the difficult decision to accept the head coaching position at LSU,” Kiffin wrote in a social media post. The LSU opening became available after the school parted ways with Brian Kelly in October, immediately making Kiffin the leading candidate for the Tigers’ head coaching role.

Kiffin expressed a desire to finish the season with Ole Miss, citing his commitment to the team’s historic success. “I was hoping to complete a historic six-season run with this year’s team by leading Ole Miss through the playoffs, capitalizing on the team’s incredible success, and investing everything into a playoff run,” Kiffin said. He added that his request to remain with the Rebels through the postseason was denied by Athletic Director Keith Carter, despite support from the team.

The 50-year-old coach has a history of high-profile moves and controversies. Kiffin was dismissed from the NFL’s Oakland Raiders in 2008 after just over one season, with team owner Al Davis criticizing him publicly. He left the Tennessee Volunteers after one season in 2010 to join USC, only to be fired mid-tenure in 2013.

Despite past controversies, Kiffin has achieved consistent success with Ole Miss, compiling a 55-19 record, including a top-10 finish in 2023 and three bowl victories.

Ole Miss has named defensive coordinator Pete Golding as the new head coach. Golding, who joined the Rebels’ staff in 2023, will now lead the team through the College Football Playoff and beyond.

Kiffin’s departure to a conference rival marks one of the most dramatic coaching moves of the college football season, reshaping the playoff landscape and igniting new rivalries within the SEC.
