Disney’s highly anticipated sequel, Zootopia 2, has opened to record-breaking box office numbers, grossing an estimated $556 million worldwide since its Wednesday debut. The film earned $96 million domestically over the weekend and $156 million over the five-day Thanksgiving holiday, making it the largest international opening for an animated movie and the fourth-highest global debut ever.
The original Zootopia, released nearly a decade ago, became a surprise hit with a $75 million domestic opening in March, and the sequel continues the adventures of bunny cop Judy Hopps (voiced by Ginnifer Goodwin) and small-time hustler fox Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman).
Zootopia 2’s success also highlighted an otherwise slow year for theaters, pairing with Universal Pictures’ Wicked: For Good, which earned $62.8 million domestically over the weekend and $393 million internationally, bringing its North American total to $270.4 million.
With strong openings for both sequels, Thanksgiving weekend proved to be a rare bright spot for the box office this year. Analysts noted that Zootopia 2’s global performance sets a new benchmark for animated films and underscores Disney’s dominance in family entertainment.
